Why is understanding conflict resolution tactics important to public relations?

Conflicts are “unresolved differences”. In order for people to function together more cooperatively and efficiently they need to be able to resolve the problem. Conflict resolution aims are coming together with a compromise. It is important to public relations people to understand conflict resolution tactics because we are not always going to be working with people we enjoy being around. There are many people that have a different opinion that we are going to have to work together with to make compromises.

When using conflict resolution along with mixed motives in public relations, it can empower PR managers to become part of the decision-making group of a particular organization. Having a good understanding of conflict resolution in public relations is vital in order to solve problems that come up frequently within the business. The article explains the findings of the study. “Conclusions of this study were, first, that public relations will become a part of the
dominant coalition if it has experience in the new model of symmetry to include tactics of conflict resolution. Second, top management directly affects the practice of public relations to operate according to its own agenda — in a two-way, mixed motive manner.”

It is necessary for public relations practitioners to understand conflict resolution because problems will arise at some point or another within a business. People in public relations must be prepared to deal with any type of problems that may occur. As soon as a conflict is dealt with there is the possibility that the conflict cycle will begin all over again for that same issue. The four phases in conflict management are the proactive phase, strategic phase, reactive phase and recovery phase.

Understanding conflict resolution tactics in public relations is important because, conflicts are bound to arise and there must be some type of agreement to on issues among employees.

The use of conflict resolution and mixed motives can empower public relations
managers to become part of the decision-making group of an organization.
